Sting: Musical excellence knows no age or fashion...

The author of "Every Breath You Take," in top form at 71, gave a concert in Adeje that those lucky enough to have the opportunity to witness it will never forget.

There are many kinds of pacts: gentlemen's pacts, non-aggression pacts, silence pacts, Toledo pacts, Warsaw pacts, state pacts, government pacts, and even pacts with the devil—don't confuse these last two, as they don't necessarily mean the same thing.

Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner's, or, more accurately, Sting's, is with music. An alliance, an artistic commitment — and often with a marked social dimension — that the Newcastle singer and songwriter established more than 40 years ago. And, frankly, it hasn't gone badly for him at all.

On October 2nd, Sting will turn 72. An age that, judging by what was seen and heard yesterday at the Adeje Football Field, only reveals — and that's no small feat — the experience of an artist who commands the stage, who knows how to respond at every moment to the audience's demands, and, above all, who hasn't lost an ounce of enthusiasm for his craft. After arriving in Bilbao on Thursday, the My Songs tour returned to the southern Tenerife town this Saturday and today visits Gran Canaria.

With an artist in top form and a repertoire—both with The Police and solo—that includes such acclaimed songs as "Fields of Gold," "Shape of My Heart," "Roxanne," "Demolition Man," "Englishman in New York," "Every Breath You Take," and "Message in a Bottle," the audience, spanning several generations — as we know, good music knows no age or fashion — enjoyed a broad and brilliant rundown of many of the hits that have shaped Sting's career. Long live art.
